CNN —At least 22 people have been killed and dozens injured in an airstrike in the city of Omdurman, Sudan, according to a Reuters report citing the Sudanese ministry of health. In a statement released Saturday, the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said that more than 31 people were killed with homes demolished and dozens of civilians injured. “The Rapid Support Forces condemn the most severe aircraft bombing on Saturday morning, on innocent citizens in a number of residential neighborhoods,” the statement read. SAF said they carried out an operation on Saturday in Omdurman, Sudan’s most populous city, killing a number of rebels and destroying combat vehicles. Data from the United Nations International Organization for Migration, (IOM) said nearly 2.8 million people have fled Sudan, many without passports, for neighboring countries like Egypt, Ethiopia and Libya.

CNN —Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, has undergone surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer, she revealed in an episode of her “Tea Talks” podcast released Monday. During the podcast, which was recorded last week before her surgery, Ferguson said, “Tomorrow I’m going in for a mastectomy.”“I want every single person who is listening to this podcast to go get checked, go get screened, and go do it,” Ferguson said. According to PA, a spokesman for the duchess said: “Sarah, Duchess of York was recently diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer detected at a routine mammogram screening.”“She was advised she needed to undergo surgery which has taken place successfully,” according to PA.“The duchess is receiving the best medical care and her doctors have told her that the prognosis is good. She is now recuperating with her family.”The spokesperson added that the duchess expressed her “immense gratitude” to the medical staff who had supported her and the staff involved in the mammogram. Her illness “was otherwise symptom free,” and Ferguson “believes her experience underlines the importance of regular screening,” the spokesperson said, according to PA.

CNN —Eating cassava flour helped save the lives of four children found alive in the Amazon jungle more than a month after their plane crashed, according to a Colombian military special forces official. The children ate “three kilograms (six pounds) of farina,” a coarse cassava flour commonly used by indigenous tribes in the Amazon region, said spokesperson Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez Suárez. The children’s mother Magdalena Mucutuy Valencia was killed in the plane crash on May 1, leaving them alone and stranded in the Amazon jungle. The children’s disappearance sparked a massive military-led search operation that saw more than one hundred Colombian special forces troops and over 70 indigenous scouts combing the deep forest. They told officials that they had found a dog – a Belgian Shepherd search dog named Wilson that belonged to special forces.

CNN —Two more suspects have been named in the alleged murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, including the alleged mastermind of the crime, Brazilian police say. Phillips and Pereira were shot dead a year ago while they were returning from a reporting trip in the Amazon. Fisherman Janio Freitas de Souza has also been named as a suspect and has links to the illegal fishing criminal organization, the statement added. Both men have been imprisoned since July 2022, along with three other suspects and are awaiting trial, police told CNN. The deaths of Phillips and Pereira has drawn global attention to the perils often faced by journalists and environmental activists in Brazil.

Even before the fighting intensified, years of political instability meant Sudan had several million people internally displaced. The country also hosted 1.13 million refugees from other conflict-ridden countries, including South Sudan, Eritrea and Syria, according to UNHCR data. Tens of thousands of South Sudanese are flocking home from neighboring Sudan, which erupted in violence last month. CNN —The daughter of jailed Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny says her father’s health is deteriorating. His life and activism was the subject of an award-winning CNN Film which chronicled the investigation into a brazen assassination on him. In 2020, he was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok – an act he and Western officials blamed on the Kremlin. After a five-month stay in Germany recovering from the Novichok poisoning, Navalny returned to Moscow in 2021 and was immediately arrested for violating probation terms imposed from a 2014 case. “We want freedom of election, we want freedom of all political prisoners, especially Alexey Navalny my dad – and foreign journalists,” she said.

CNN —More than a dozen people were lynched by a crowd in Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on Monday, on suspicion of being gang members, according to authorities. Residents who spoke to Reuters and AFP on camera said they believed the victims were gang members. CNN —Peru’s new President Dina Boluarte has proposed bringing general elections forward two years to April 2024, during a televised speech delivered early Monday morning, amid ongoing protests throughout the country. Boluarte became Peru’s first female president last week after lawmakers removed her predecessor Pedro Castillo. Castillo on Monday insisted that he is still Peru’s President, according to a series of tweets posted on his Twitter account. CNN —China will abolish its Covid-19 trace tracking service, the “Mobile Itinerary card,” on Tuesday, officials say. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, China has used the itinerary card system to track individuals’ travel histories over 14 days. The system is tied to people’s phone numbers and aims to identify individuals who have visited cities with any area designated a “high-risk zone” by authorities. This system, together with a health QR code that tracks individuals’ health statuses regarding Covid-19, determined people’s movements into public spaces across China. Even after much of the world relaxed pandemic restrictions, China continued to lock down entire cities and send all Covid-19 patients to central quarantine facilities, while restricting others from visiting areas where positive cases were detected.

CNN —The Taliban on Wednesday put an alleged murderer to death in the first public execution held in Afghanistan since the Islamist group returned to power. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the man was shot three times by the father of his alleged victim in an execution attended by senior Taliban officials in southwestern Farah province. The man had been accused of stabbing the victim to death in 2017 and stealing a cell phone and bicycle. It is the first public execution since Kabul fell to the Taliban following the withdrawal of US forces from the country in August 2021. During the Taliban’s earlier period of rule, from 1996 to 2001, public executions were common, as were other violent punishments.

CNN —Iran’s former president Mohammad Khatami has urged the current government to be more lenient with protesters, amid ongoing nationwide demonstrations representing the biggest challenge to the Islamic Republic in decades. The anti-government demonstrations were sparked by the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman in September. Khatami, pictured in 2006, called on Tehran to "take a softer approach and listen to" anti-regime protesters. Public figures in Iran have solicited the government to listen to the grievances of anti-regime protesters. CNN —A court in Argentina on Tuesday sentenced the country’s vice president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, to six years in prison and disqualified her from holding public office again after finding her guilty of corruption during her earlier terms as President. Fernández de Kirchner has temporary immunity due to her current role so will not immediately go to jail, and can appeal. The former President awarded “80% of the national public road works in Santa Cruz in favor of Báez companies between 2003 and 2015,” according to Telam, Argentina’s state-run news agency. Baez was also sentenced to six years in prison, as were former secretary of public works, José López, and the former director of national roads, Néstor Periotti, for their involvement in the alleged scheme. Lopez and Periotti have also been disqualified from holding public office again, Telam reported.

CNN —Two British-Iranian journalists working in the United Kingdom have been warned by police of a “credible” plot by Iran to kill them, according to their employer, London-based news channel Iran International. The Iranian government has labeled Iran International as a “terrorist organization,” Iran’s state-aligned news agency ISNA reported Tuesday, citing the country’s information ministry. CNN reached out to Iran International for comment. Iran International’s protest coverageFounded in 2017, Iran International has been at the forefront of covering the recent demonstrations with exclusive footage of events on the ground. The sanctioned entities included what Tehran referred to as “anti-Iranian TV channels” such as Iran International, Tasnim reported.

CNN —The death toll from the worst flooding Nigeria has seen in a decade has passed 600 people, the country’s humanitarian affairs ministry tweeted on Sunday. NEMA said the release of excess water from a dam in neighboring Cameroon had contributed to the flooding. While many parts of Nigeria are prone to yearly floods, flooding in certain areas has been more severe than the last major floods in 2012, a Red Cross official in Kogi told CNN last week.
